The 40-year-old said that if he decided to play the next year, it would be in San Jose.
“I am a Shark. There is 1 team, and it’s here.” Thornton told reporters in the NHL Awards in Las Vegas last month that he intends on playing next season and potentially beyond that.
The Future Hall of Famer does not have a contract with the Sharks for next season yet and he is coming off his second-consecutive one-year thing. He earned $5 million . Joe Thornton has realized everything an NHL player can do except win a Stanley Cup. He attained 1,065 assists in his career last year, eclipsing Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Stan Mikita and Steve Yzerman to move into eighth place on the NHL’s all-time aids list.
Thornton has played 1,566 matches in his career and he has 1,478 points (1,024 because he arrived to San Jose on November 30, 2005 in the largest trade in franchise history).
He is the NHL’s active leader in career assists (1,065) and points (1,478) in 1,566 games played. Thornton scored his 400th career goal on November 13 and on April 4 that he handed Nicklas Lidstrom (1,564) into 12th place on the all time games record and Steve Yzerman (1,063) into eighth position on the all-time aids list.
He was eighth on the Sharks with 51 points last season, as he averaged 15 minutes and 33 seconds Time on Ice per Game (TOI/G). Joe Thornton finished in 73 regular season matches with 16 goals, 35 assists and 51 points.
